October 28, 2010 - Learn about your neighborhood and city's most recent 20 years when the first five segments of By the People: The Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program
are shown at the Ritz Theater, 345 13th Ave. NE, on Sunday, November 14th at 6 p.m.
By the People
is a multi-episode look at the 20 years of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP). Minneapolis Television Network (MTN) staff have compiled this retrospective from their years of filming at neighborhood events and meetings in Minneapolis.
The five half hour episodes of By the People
look at different aspects of the NRP, such as the neighborhood planning process and the way the program builds a sense of community. The collection also looks at the projects jump-started by the NRP in areas such as housing and economic development. Hundreds of community volunteers who were interviewed at events and meetings starting in the early 1990's tell the story of NRP in this series.
The Minneapolis Neighborhood News, the MTN cable TV program produced collaboratively by NRP and MTN, is a significant source of footage for this series. Series editor John Akre sifted through the hundreds of tapes shot to produce the more than 100 episodes of Minneapolis Neighborhood News to create the By the People shows.
There is no cost to view the film fest. A donation, however, of $10 is suggested to help the Ritz Theater - a major NRP renovation project of the Sheridan neighborhood.
